Rabbit Rabbit
It’s June 24th, 2022. Eeva (Poppy Golland) wakes up from her ordinary abortion procedure and remembers that earlier today SCOTUS overturned Roe v. Wade. Dr. Robbie (Amy Morton) and Nurse Angela (Echaka Agba) manage the surge of calls at the clinic. Eeva’s best friend, Baby (Cassidy Slaughter-Mason), watches a soap opera on the waiting room TV. She fixates on the couple at the center of the drama--Soap Opera Woman (J. Nicole Brooks) and Soap Opera Man (Travis Knight). The plot thickens as Soap Opera Man goes to pull the cord on Soap Opera Woman who is in a coma and hooked up to life-giving machines. But why is Baby so obsessed with it? Could it have to do with her compartmentalization of her own abortion a year ago? Mel (Owais Ahmed), the penis behind Eeva’s pregnancy, arrives with half the abortion cost. He’s been ghosting Eeva for weeks. He’s also late for an audition. As he leaves, Eeva and Baby use the cash he brought to get a cab home. Eeva and Baby are guilted into attending their other best friend, Al’s (Debo Belogun) new girlfriend’s birthday party. They haven’t met her yet, but Al insists it’s important they come. Antisocial Baby doesn’t want to go. Restless Eeva is determined to go. But why? Is she secretly hoping to run into Mel? Al’s girlfriend, Bowie (Gloria Imseih Petrelli) is brilliant, funny, and causes friction between Eeva and Baby. Bowie talks about the protests today, Eeva talks about her abortion, but avoidant Baby would rather drink gasoline than talk about abortions and protests right now. She slips out of the bar as Mel shows up. The night dissolves into chaos as Al proposes to Bowie, Eeva confronts Mel, and Soap Opera Man appears as Baby’s new imaginary friend. Through flashbacks, trampoline jumping, and emotional disclosures, both Eeva and Baby face their pasts in order to reclaim their potential. Based on our own abortion experiences, the film explores the ambivalent feelings this life-saving procedure can evoke, and the communities that help ground you as your rights are threatened.
- Surreal Comedy Short
While Rabbit Rabbit is inspired by our personal abortion experiences, we believe the future and (sometimes obfuscated) history of reproductive justice is collective and intersectional. OTV feels like an ideal home for this work - not only because of our alignment with your mission and community, but because of the work OTV has done to re-enforce independent artists through shared resources, values and collective action.
